Your Tape, it Lulled Me to Sleep.

I haven't been sleeping well lately, which is ironic as Cameron is now sleeping through the night. I am exhausted by 8pm, so I usually head to bed right after the kids are tucked in. Three hours later I'm wide awake, staring at the ceiling, cursing because I really am so tired. I think that my brain is just in overdrive. There is too much to process, so many changes happening in a really short period of time. Good changes, but changes nonetheless. I'm excited about what's to come, I know I've made solid decisions that will benefit everyone. There are still so many unknowns though, and the unknown is scary and uncomfortable. Also, this college reunion is tripping me out a bit. And then there is BlogHer at the end of July. Talk about a jam packed month! New job, college reunion, and a convention! How will August ever compete?

Headphones (Björk):
genius to fall
asleep to your tape
last night
sounds go through the muscles
these abstract
wordless movements
they start off cells
that haven't been
touched
before

these cells are virgins

my headphones
they saved my life
your tape
it lulled me to sleep

nothing will be the same

i'm fast asleep

i like this resonance
it elevates me
i don't recognize myself
this is very interesting

my headphones
they saved my life
your tape
it lulled me to sleep

i'm fast asleep now

i'm fast asleep

my headphones
they saved my life
your tape
it lulled me to sleep

I Just Quit My Job.

I resigned from my job yesterday. Yeah, the job that I loved, with the really cool position, great boss, lots of vacation time...crazy, eh? I have been struggling (really, really struggling) since I got back to work. I wasn't able to find a balance between rushing out the door in the morning, commuting almost three hours a day, working eight hours, and getting home just in time to put the kids to bed. I know that a lot of people make it work, but it wasn't working for me or my family.

The next two years are crucial for Max and his long term development. The key years for rewiring a child's brain are between the ages of 2 and 5. We have a limited window in which to jump a lot of hurdles, and I want to be there for it. I want to have the energy to help him over those hurdles and to cheer him on. I want to have enough time in my day that Cameron gets her fair share of me, and that she doesn't end up feeling like Max is the centre of the universe (because she is under the impression that the sun shines out of her bum, and I'd hate to dissuade her of this notion). I want to be there for Scott when he needs to talk, instead of nodding off, or not paying attention, and also have energy for a little romance. And I want to make sure that there is some time for me in there too, because if I'm not whole, everybody loses.

So, I have found a new position that I will start in July. I'm not going to divulge any details about it just yet, because things are still getting figured out. But I know it is a good fit, if not a perfect fit. It will really allow me to be an active part of Max's therapy. I will be able to work from home a lot. I won't be sitting at a desk. I will be able to be very creative, and make a big difference. I'll get to work at a bunch of different sites, and I'll wear many hats. I can't remember being this excited about work. This is the beginning of a new chapter, and I have Max to thank for showing me the path I was meant to take.

Operation Suck It Up.

Max is on the cusp of a break through. We can all see it. Between the singing and increase in words, we are all waiting with baited breath for the next big thing. But how do we get there? What will be the key in pushing him over the top? While Scott and I have been scratching our heads, not quite sure what to do next, the members of Team Max are ready to rock and roll, with a slew of ideas on how to get our boy talking.

Last week, Max's Speech Therapist, Kim Pace, emailed the following message:

Hi Team Max! I am writing to let you know that over the course of the next 3 weeks, I have set the following goals for Max:

1. Move him off drinking from the sippy cup .... this is going to be a challenge, but is very important because sippy cups reinforce a tongue thrust/suckling type of swallow that we really need Max to move away from in order to move his oral motor skills for speech forward! I would like to see him drinking with a straw (a specific one of course....). That said, he was not happy about this little idea of mine today! He has significant oral sensitivity and we will need to address this first. No need to do anything directly with Max yet - just want you all to get ready and I will target next session and send out the next steps to everyone! You can, however, model by drinking from straws around him!

2. Establish some use of his lips so he'll produce more lip sounds. Right now, most of his sounds are made with his tongue. The only lip sound he has is "w". He approximates a /m/ but if you watch closely, it's not a strong /m/ - more like a nasal sound with his lips open slightly! Pretty tricky really! What can you do - Rob - heavy on the p/b/m sounds and words within music if you can. Model and practice Indian calls (i.e. tapping your mouth while you vocalize).

3. Eating - and chewing - yes, we'll be going there as well .... Katrina - can you email me Max's favourite foods that he eats with a spoon so I can plan for next session? Right now, he really avoids use of those lips while eating and chewing ....

I think that's it for now! Looking forward to a quick improvement in these skills - once he can use his lips better, it will add 3 more sounds to his repertoire which will really help us understand those words he's saying even more! Today, by the way - he sang "Old MacDonald" for me! It was great!

Take care and have a great week!

Kim

I would have never noticed that he doesn't use his lips, that this is why we aren't hearing certain consonants. Now that I am observing him more closely I can see what Kim means when she says he doesn't really use his lips. I've never had any luck getting Max to use a straw, so I was intrigued as to how Kim planned to transition Max from his beloved sippy cup to a straw.

The first step will be modeling using a straw. We bought a big box of straws and we are going to start using them in front of Max. Milk, water, beer, chardonnay, you name it, we're drinking it through a straw. Note to self - drink slowly!

We have also poked a really big hole in the sippy cup spout, so that Max will have to use his lips to control the flow. I got a dirty look from him this morning when he took his first slurp as if to say "hey….wait a second…something is DIFFERENT". He put it cup down, but did return later for some more milk.

The next step will be to put a straw in his cup, but cut it so that it only reaches the top of the spout, and doesn't poke out. After he is used to that, we will slowly make the straw longer and longer until it is sticking out of the spout and he has no choice but to suck on the straw.

Sounds so simple when I write about it…let's hope putting into play will be equally easy.

A Bunch of Random Thoughts.

My college reunion is in 2 weeks. 2 weeks! Holy sh!t!! I am excited, and nervous, and really looking forward to being kid free for a weekend (is that bad?).

So You Think You Can Dance is the best show on television. If I knew anything about dance I'd blog about it, but I don't, so I'll just appreciate it from afar.

I turned Cameron's baby monitor off last night, because she has been waking up at 3am and I want her to sleep through the night. Worked like magic...she may have woken up, but I slept through it and by all appearances, she wasn't scarred. I mean, she was still speaking to me in the morning, and I got a a whole 6 hours of sleep!

Scott went to NYC for the weekend, and Cam was sick (Murphy's Law, right?). Scott made up for it by bringing me Grey Goose and ck Euphoria from duty free. Big points, eh? I may be easy, but I'm not cheap!

Max is now singing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". Music Therapy will heal the world.

Work is kicking my ass. Commuting is kicking my ass. I keep buying lottery tickets but I haven't won the millions yet. Go figure.

My blogspot url seems to have stopped working. If I had any extra energy I'd figure it out, but I don't, so I won't. So, you know, if you like the site, make sure to bookmark www.ficklefeline.ca !

Jon from Jon and Kate Plus Eight needs to grow a pair. He's as bad as she is, in his own apathetic, whipped way.

The new Mos Def recording is really good. You should check it out.

I need to go to bed...tomorrow is a full day of therapy for Max, appointments and other good stuff. More on that later.

Dreams Do Come True.

My wonderful friend Jennifer M. gave birth to a beautiful little boy a few hours ago. Welcome to the world Maddox Bradley M. (a healthy 7 lbs even and 20 inches long). Congratulations Jen and Brad - you make beautiful babies. And most of all, thank you for sharing this incredible experience with me. It was pure magic, something I will never forget. Jen made it look easy, Brad did a pretty good job of keeping his cool, and Aunty Laura shed some tears (I did too). Blessed is the world when a new soul enters it, and today the world is blessed indeed.

It is More Important to Look Good...

...than to feel good, and Cameron is living proof of this. Poor kiddo has been under the weather this past week, and has been feeling like ten pounds of poop in a five pound bag the past few days. Perfect timing of course, with her dad away in New York. Anyway, she still looks fierce. Tyra would be proud.

Max's Music Therapy.

Max is now singing four songs: "Roll over", "Itsy Bitsy Spider", "Old MacDonald's Farm", and "Tidy Up". I think he was also singing the chorus to Talib Kweli's "I Try" today in the car...needless to say, we are blown away with his progress. Here is a video I shot of Max and another little boy named Michael in their music therapy session last week. It's fairly long as I wanted to give a good overview of what they accomplish in an hour long session.

What's Your Signature Scent?

I was in the drugstore the other day shopping for things like hand lotion, deodorant, body wash…and I got to thinking, how is all this stuff going to smell together? I don't normally wear perfume, but I do use a fair number of products that have scents. Off the top of my head - shampoo, conditioner, soap, face wash/toner/moisturizer, hair spray, body lotion, and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things. I mostly stick to Aveda and Pureology, so it's all good smelling stuff, and so far as I can tell, it seems to work out okay.

I mean, I think I smell okay? Scott has no complaints anyway. My kids don't shy away from me. People don't move back when I walk past them. My big pet peeve about scent is people who douse themselves with perfume. There is one person I know who likes to give herself a squirt of Chanel No. 5 every time she has a smoke (and she smokes a lot). By the end of the work day, she reeks to high heaven, and lord help you if you get stuck in an elevator with her!

When I do wear perfume (and I only wear a tiny bit), I like Angel by Thierry Mugler, Stila Creme Bouquet, and Sun Moon Stars by Karl Lagerfeld.

Angel - "an essences of honey, chocolate, and caramel and is blended with notes of vanilla, patchouli, and sandalwood".

Stila Creme Bouquet - "a sweet, sophisticated and feminine blend of warm vanilla and delicate florals".

Sun Moon Stars - "a refreshing, oriental, floral fragrance, a feminine perfume scent possessing a blend of fruit, care oriental florals, orange blossom, amber and beauty musk.

First off, who comes up with this marketing copy? And how do they write it with a straight face? Second, it seems to me I definitely like one type of smell - a warm, natural, vanilla, floral type scent. I wonder what that says about me?

What is your signature scent? What does it say about you?

Do Not Be Deceived.

At first glance, she looks like a sweet little girl. But do not be deceived, for while she appears to be all sunshine and roses and sugar and spice, she is not. In fact, her new nickname is "Fang". You got it, "Fang". Turns out, Cameron has a penchant for biting other babies at daycare. Charming. She especially enjoys biting one boy in particular, which I find interesting (I'm sure this little boy's mom has another word for it). Because of Max, I am fairly well versed in the basics of behaviour therapy, so I asked Cameron's daycare teachers what they thought the function of her behaviour was. Meaning, why is she biting? I asked them what she was doing before she bit this little boy, had anything happened between her and this little boy previously? Had he smacked her? Taken a toy from her? Given her unwanted attention? Nope, nope and nope. So far as they could see, Cameron was just biting out of the blue.

Since we all know that kids don't just bite for no reason, I went to the next level. Perhaps she is biting because she is teething? Under the weather? Has a wicked bad diaper rash? Maybe...or maybe this little boy is just especially tasty. Maybe he tastes like barbecue sauce, or rice krispie squares. Maybe he is just the right amount of pudgy and muscle tone to feel really good on her gums as she chomps down on him. I hope word doesn't get out that he is super yummy with the other babies, or there will be nothing left of him. Cameron is home today with pink eye (yeah, great, I know) so the little boy got a day long reprieve from "Fang". Today she is "Princess Goopy Eye". Hopefully I won't be "Queen Goopy Eye" tomorrow.

Sleep is For Suckers.

I often get asked "how the heck to you find time to blog everyday?". The answer? I sacrifice sleep. And writing is therapeutic for me, so expressing myself through my site is likely a form of counting sheep. It helps centre me, kind of like an online diary where I know that everyone has a key. Whether I am blogging about Max, Cameron, Autism, or granny panties, writing helps me express myself as a mom, an advocate, and a sarcastic 30-something woman with a quirky sense of humour. But some days are hard. Some days I don't know what to say. Or, what I have to say is "omg-I-am-exhausted-and-feeling-like-I-have-the-weight-of-the-world-on-my-shoulders". And I don't feel like writing that because a) it's a huge downer and b) I already wrote that this week and c) focusing on it doesn't help me feel better. Hence the posts about wanting to see someone's va-jay-jay and my desire to dump coffee on an old boss.

My life is complicated and busy. But I think I need it to be that way. Sounds crazy to say that, I know, but hear me out. By being constantly on the go, whether it be commuting to my full time job in Toronto, taking Max to therapy, making sure Cameron is getting her fair share of attention, running a household, updating my site, finding time for Scott, and squeaking out a moment for myself here and there, I don't have time to dwell. I don't have time to worry about the future. I just keep putting one foot in front of the other, taking it a day at a time. I can worry about tomorrow, tomorrow.

Maybe this is how I manage to stay positive? There are cracks in the veneer for sure, but I fear if I ever let myself come to a full stop, I would probably fall over from sheer exhaustion. We all have different ways of coping, mine is to keep myself moving. That doesn't leave much time to smell the roses, let alone deal with the crazy tangle of weeds in my front "garden" (and I use the term loosely), but that's where it's at. I know something's gotta give, but when I look at the list of things on the go, I don't see an obvious contender (though the current sacrificial lambs are usually finding time for Scott and squeaking out a moment for myself - go figure). I keep telling myself that it will get better. I know it will. It will.

TMI Tuesday: I Love to Curse.

I have a mouth like a sailor. I know it isn't "ladylike" to swear/curse/use expletives, but my dog, I LOVE doing it. Mind you, I can clean up my language when I need to, like at work, or at the daycare (though I said a few choice words in the parking lot this morning after being informed that my sweet daughter Cameron has been biting the other babies). Now that Max knows how to say the word "duck" I especially need to be careful around the kids. But you have to admit, sometimes there is no getting around dropping a big ol' F-BOMB. Or muttering a few words you can't say on television under your breath. Swearing feels good. Curse words stick around because they have power and make an impact. They cut through when being polite has stopped working. There are a lot of people who don't approve of swearing. It makes them uncomfortable. Or they think it is a sign of lower intelligence, or uncouth. But some of the smartest people I know have the worst potty mouths out there, so that doesn't hold water with me - f*ck that!

When are the best times to swear?

In the car: "You ASS HAT! Look before you change lanes - sh!t for brains!"
When you accidentally hurt yourself: "Mother f*cker! Son of a whore! Jebus F*cking Christ"
After getting off the phone with a particularly annoying person: "What the f*ck?!"
Lock your keys in the car: "Dog Damnit! Argh! For f*ck sake!"
Lose your wallet: "F*CK F*CK F*CK F*CK F********************CK!!!!"
When you are playing poker: "You ain't got sh!t you lying ass mother f*cker"
When you are drinking: "Listen you daft c*nt, if I've told you once, I've told you a million times, he's no f*cking good for you but you never f*cking learn!"

I guess what I'm saying is that if you drive with me, see me trip, overhear me ordering pizza, witness me lock my keys in my car or lose my wallet, or have the pleasure of playing poker with me (which typically involves drinking), you will more than likely hear some off-colour language coming out of my mouth. But not on my blog. Nope, here I'm all about the *!&$# and the @!*&.

  • 9:01 PM: FickleFeline Love it - seperate interviews spliced together - lol.

  • 9:02 PM: FickleFeline Kate is dissing Jon's cooking skills. That's not nice.

  • 9:04 PM: FickleFeline The boys really do still need the subtitles...

  • 9:11 PM: FickleFeline I think Emeril feels bad for Jon. But he afraid of Kate...

  • 9:12 PM: FickleFeline Jon looks so beaten down. He got stuck doing food prep. Kate really enjoys making fun of him, which isn't very nice.

  • 9:12 PM: FickleFeline Her laugh is kind of mean too...she is one bitter lady.

  • 9:13 PM: FickleFeline The kids are sitting at the table playing with lunch meat. I wonder if it is organic lunch meat.

  • 9:13 PM: FickleFeline Kate takes another dig at Jon.

  • 9:15 PM: FickleFeline Maybe Emeril will save her!

  • 9:16 PM: FickleFeline Stouffers shovels out some guilt over making sure your kids get regular family dinners or else they will fail in school.

  • 9:16 PM: FickleFeline Another odd State Farm ad, featuring a door.

  • 9:17 PM: FickleFeline And who doesn't like a little advertising to go to church? Love it. State Farm. Methodist Church. Subaru ad.

  • 9:18 PM: FickleFeline Awh - another flashback. See how nice Kate was when her kids were tiny?

  • 9:18 PM: FickleFeline Kate prompts Emeril to do the BAM thing. Emeril looks like he would rather be swimming in a sewer than hanging out with Kate.

  • 9:19 PM: FickleFeline Hannah comes to hang out with Jon. Probably because she never gets to see him.

  • 9:19 PM: FickleFeline The boys are up to no good...looks familiar.

  • 9:21 PM: FickleFeline Jon seems to enjoy that Emeril is taking over in the kitchen. See, Jon is totally passive-aggressive.

  • 9:21 PM: FickleFeline LOL - Emeril just told Kate to leave Jon alone.

  • 9:22 PM: FickleFeline Someone has to stand up for the poor guy!

  • 9:22 PM: FickleFeline Jon tells Emeril he doesn't know how he made it to his 100th show. I suspect Jon will not be around to see the 200th show.

  • 9:23 PM: FickleFeline Preview of next week...more cross-promotion. Wow - they are really reaching to fill a half hour without Jon and Kate killing each other.

  • 9:24 PM: FickleFeline 6 minutes to go, and all we've really seen is the adults in the kitchen. What about the Plus 8??

  • 9:25 PM: FickleFeline The kids help advertise Emeril's wares. Nice promo shots!

  • 9:25 PM: FickleFeline The kids take off outside and get out from under foot.

  • 9:26 PM: FickleFeline Then they make believe that they are cooking, with leaves and rocks. Because you know, they are never allowed to be in the kitchen.

  • 9:27 PM: FickleFeline Has Cara said one word this show? She needs to get rescued. Jon is feeling degraded...poor guy.

  • 9:27 PM: FickleFeline What's the white stuff? LMAO

  • 9:28 PM: FickleFeline The kids eat it all up. Jon stares at his plate and ignores everyone. Kate is such a faker!

  • 9:28 PM: FickleFeline This show is really starting to blow. It has lost the magic.

  • 9:29 PM: FickleFeline 100 shows...and the flash backs just make me sad for how much they have changed.

  • 9:30 PM: FickleFeline That's all folks. See you next week!

Walk Now For Autism: Photo Essay.

We got up at 5:30am this morning to get ready for the big day. Sunday is usually the day we lounge around in our pajamas until...uh...we get into fresh pajamas to go to bed, so the kids were a little confused as to why we were rushing around, getting them dressed and out the door, all before 8am. Max kept his cool and enjoyed the drive into the T.dot (though he does look a little bleary eyed). Cameron decided we were all nuts and caught up on her cutie sleep. Scott did not enjoy me taking his picture for my blog, but he was a good sport.
We met everyone at Timothy's at Queen and Bay for 9am. Nana and Cameron held down the fort while Scott chased Max around and I got everyone their t-shirts.
My oldest friend (we've known each other since kindergarten!), Elizabeth shows off her Team Maxwell t-shirt, while enjoying some much needed java.
Scott manages to catch Max during one of his laps of the coffee shop to show off his T-shirt. Pretty strong likeness, eh?
Elizabeth and me mugging for the camera in our Team Maxwell t-shirts.
Brandie and her boyfriend Simone joined us for the walk as well. I think they look really good in their Team Maxwell shirts! It was cold this morning, so a lot of us wore them over long sleeve shirts.
Christine brought the Team Maxwell mascot, her chihuahua "Max". And yes, that is his real name. And yes, this has been the source of many laughs in our house.
Around 9am, Cameron started to get a bit annoyed with sitting around and waiting. She thought it was time to go and register for the walk. Amazing what an effective communicating tool screaming is.
We let Max walk up to Nathan Phillips Square - he really enjoyed walking with his dad, but thought I was cramping his style with all the pictures.
My second oldest friend (we've known each other since Grade 1), Athena, brought her entire family to walk under the Team Maxwell banner. Those are some cute kids, eh?
Bumpa Dave and Grandpa Ole showing of their t-shirts.
The Team Maxwell mascot, Max, getting some love.
Omg! The walk is starting! Let's gooooooooooooo!!
Being the class act we are, Team Maxwell took a short cut out of the square and skipped the big wait to go through the "official" walk entryway. We tried to look inconspicuous as we cut in at the front of the procession.
Along the walk route there were various musical acts to keep us pumped. We also got some cheers for our t-shirts.
Some of the younger members of Team Maxwell got pooped near the end of the walk, so we cut through the Eaton Centre instead of taking the official course. Yeah, we are classy like that. Elizabeth took the opportunity to snap an official Team Maxwell photograph for us. Apparently Scott thought this was a race, so he entered the square singing the theme song to "Rocky" at the top of his lungs. Max tried not to be too embarrassed.
There were a lot of cool team t-shirts at the walk. I think ours was the best (of course), though I think next year I'll go with a colour other than white. Perhaps lime green or bright yellow will stand out more in the crowd...
Thanks to our friends, family, and faithful readers, Scott and I each raised over $1000 for the walk, which meant we were recognized in the Grand Club. We thought this was pretty cool, and we made sure to get a picture of our names in lights.

And of course, we waited too long for the official family photo. Cameron went home early with her grandparents, and by 11:15am, Max was done. Good times.
I don't think this day could have gone any better. The rain held off, the kids were really well behaved, everyone who said they were going to turn up found us, and we got to do something really positive for Max. Next year I'll start my planning a little earlier than, say, 2 weeks before the walk. But I think for 2 weeks of fundraising and planning, we did fantastic!

Stay tuned for the Mabel's Labels Camp Pack draw results and video footage of the walk. Thank you again to everyone who donated - you have officially blown my mind!

We Did It! $4000!!

Earlier this week, when we hit the $3500 mark for the Walk For Autism tomorrow, I decided to raise the team goal to $4000. At the time, it seemed unlikely that we would actually hit $4000, but I figured it was worth a shot. Well, we did it! Team Maxwell has raised $4005! The team page shows that we have raised $3895, but I have $110 in cash donations to turn in as well, which puts us at $4005. Thank you to everyone who sponsored us - we will make you proud tomorrow. Stay tuned for walk pictures, video, and of course, the results to the Mabel's Labels Camp Pack draw!

Also, if you still want to donate, feel free - the Autism Speaks site will be accepting donations throughout today and tomorrow.

2 Days And Counting.

The Walk For Autism is 2 days away and I am getting really excited. Really! Excited! Today I went and picked up the Team Maxwell t-shirts from Come Get Customized on Yonge Street. I wasn't sure how they would look as I handled the whole transaction over the phone and through email. Joe, the owner, had promised me the shirts would look good - I figured he was the expert and I left it at that.

As you can see from the photo of me and Joe, the shirts look terrific. When Joe found out that we were walking for Max, he did us a solid and printed the shirts at cost, which really helped us out. I've never had t-shirts printed before, so I had no idea how expensive full-colour can be if you have to pay full price. I think that next year I'll go with a one colour design. I love this design though (how could I not? It's my beautiful Max), and I really wanted to see it in full colour. Christopherr Mendoza from DesignMojo designed them for us - we are very fortunate to have such talented and generous friends. As you can see, the kids are very excited about the Walk too!
I'm going to fashion a dress out of a youth small for Cameron. I think if I get some blue ribbons I can make it look cute. Team Maxwell is 15 people strong so far - I think we'll make quite an impression in our fabulous t-shirts. If you would like to join us, there is still time! Just email me with your t-shirt size, and I'll share the meetup deets with you.

TMI Thursday: I Get to See a Va-jay-jay (Besides My Own).

A few months ago, I wrote about how I wanted to see someone's va-jay-jay. Now before you get all up in arms thinking I'm a horrible pervert, go read the post. Yes, the title is titillating (snicker…), but really, all I want is to see one of my friends give birth.

Well, it looks like I might actually have a taker! If all goes according to plan, I will be in attendance when my friend Jennifer (aka Maya and Hannah's mom) gives birth to baby #3 (a boy!). My specific role will be to shoot the whole event on video (I KNOW! How awesome is that?). The one caveat? Jen says I'm not allowed to post the va-jay-jay footage on the internet. Geez…I know I have a rep as an over-sharer, but even I know where to draw the line. Note to self, find out if I can share the part in the whirlpool or epidural...kidding.

Not everyone is as into the whole child birth experience as I am. When I mentioned that I would be at the hospital, in the labour room, to a coworker, she was absolutely horrified and commented that she would never in a million years want to do that! She didn't even let her husband leave her shoulder when she had her baby. I figure life is messy. It starts that way and it ends that way, so why not embrace it? My friend Jennifer once dumped a guy because he refused to carve a pumpkin with her for Halloween because he didn't want to get sticky. I think the same rule applies here, except we're not talking about pumpkin seeds…

Anyway, the phone is turned on in my bedroom, car is gassed up, boss put on notice, flip and camera are packed in my purse with backup batteries (just in case) and all we need now is for baby boy to decide he ready to introduce himself. I wonder if this is how Scott felt when I was about ready to pop?

Overwhelmed By Kindness.

Eleven days ago, Scott and I decided to participate in the Walk For Autism. As of today, we have raised over $3500 for the walk. The "we" is not just me and Scott. The "we" is our family, our friends, and incredibly, A LOT of people whom we have never met. I have been blown away by the generosity of complete strangers. I have been floored by the supportive emails I have received letting me know how much they enjoy following Max's progress on my blog, and how they are rooting for Max and our family from afar. I've even had requests for Team Maxwell t-shirts by those who aren't able to walk with us, but want to show their support by waving the Team Maxwell flag.

Our fundraising goal was $3500, and we've already beat it! I'd love to hit $4000, but I don't want to push my luck. I guess we'll see how the next few days go. If you would like a t-shirt, I *may* have ordered a few extras, so by all means, ask away. First come first serve.

I have been told that my blogging about Max's journey is not considered "Advocacy". I have been told that I am not doing enough to support the cause of Autism. But, if writing about Max helps people understand just how much needs to be done to help kids and families suffering from Autism, and it gets people to donate to organizations like Autism Speaks, (which works to change policy, educate, and fund research to find a cure for Autism), then I guess I am contributing to the movement in my own way. Everyone has their own way of working towards change. Thank you to everyone who has sponsored Team Maxwell. Your support means everything to us.

This is Why We Walk.

One of our first cues that something was "up" with Max, was that at 14 months, he wasn't talking. At 18 months and 24 months, he still wasn't talking. It's really only been in the past few months that he has started using words (and they have been sporadic at best). This past month, we have really started to hear him use words, and hearing him talk is just about the best thing ever. It isn't just single words either, we are hearing two and three word phrases. This past weekend, when I was reading Max "Ten In the Bed" (his favourite book), he sang the words "roll over, roll over". Scott and I just about fell on the floor. Grandparents were called, and we were thrilled when Max sang the words again and again.

I decided to film him tonight so that you can hear Max sing. I hesitated before sharing the video, because if you aren't familiar with Max, you may be surprised by this video. What you will see is that he is rocking back and forth, bouncing on our couch. He rocks when he gets tired - this is how he calms himself and self-soothes. Because you don't have a starting point to measure his progress, I can tell you that the improvements we are seeing include increased eye contact, singing, leading the actions in the story without being prompted, and following instructions by turning the pages. His pronunciation isn't perfect, but his pitch is terrific, and it is very clear that he is singing the words "roll over".

This is why we walk. Getting Max to this point has taken us two years. There is no quick fix for treating Autism. It is hard work. It costs A LOT of money. It is progress measured in inches. It the last thing we think about before we fall asleep and the first thought that enters our minds when we wake up in the morning.

Thank you to everyone who has already donated to Team Maxwell for the Autism Speaks Walk For Autism. If you would like to donate, we appreciate any and all help! One day Max will say "thank you" himself, but for now, we will say it on his behalf. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Jon & Kate Plus 8: Live Blog!

Last week's post about the Jon & Kate Plus 8 Season Premiere was so popular, I thought that I should try live blogging it this week. Scott suggested I try the Scribblelive App, so I'm going to test it out this week. No promises if this post goes sideways...

  • 8:37 PM: Fickle Feline Feel free to join in and add your own snark. J & K haters and lovers welcome!

  • 8:39 PM: Fickle Feline Hey everyone, I'm going to be live blogging Jon & Kate Plus 8 tonight...assuming my own little beasts decide to stay asleep...here's hoping!

  • 8:40 PM: Fickle Feline omg - this rerun of last week's show is killing me. Jon is the king of subtle digs...he REALLY doesn't like Kate.

  • 8:44 PM: Fickle Feline How was peanut butter birthday cake a good idea? Did Kate get all the parents to sign waivers before the party that if your kid keels over from an allergic reaction, tough luck?? And don't you dare take the camera off my kids for wee Johnny who is turning blue on the ground...

  • 8:45 PM: Fickle Feline I bet Jon was wishing there was a piñata in Kate's likeness...and vice versa I'm sure!

  • 8:48 PM: Fickle Feline Awh...they were pretty cute as babies...even I gotta give 'em that!

  • 8:50 PM: Fickle Feline I think Kate's hair has become more helmet-esque each season. Pretty soon she'll just be getting it done and shelacking it.

  • 8:52 PM: Fickle Feline I was thinking that I should start a Jon & Kate drinking game...every time Jon makes a passive-aggressive remark, you take a drink. Every time Kate makes an aggressive-aggressive remark you take a drink. Wait...we'll all be completely hosed by the 1st commercial...suggestions for a more moderate version of this game??

  • 8:54 PM: Fickle Feline That Cake Boss show looks pretty good...

  • 8:54 PM: Fickle Feline Jon looks completely fried...and REALLY tan.

  • 8:54 PM: Fickle Feline Kate is really really really into her kids. She does everything for her kids...

  • 8:55 PM: Fickle Feline And Jon loves his kids too...

  • 8:55 PM: Fickle Feline And they both do everything for their kids....

  • 8:56 PM: Fickle Feline But it is clear that Jon doesn't give a rat's ass about Kate.

  • 8:56 PM: Fickle Feline And Kate wouldn't piss on Jon if he was on fire!

  • 8:56 PM: Fickle Feline Oh the tears...Kate! That's not playing fair...and your mascara might run!

  • 8:58 PM: Fickle Feline I wonder what the divorce rate statistics are for parents of multiples who have a tv show?

  • 9:00 PM: Fickle Feline Oh...here we go - giddyup

  • 9:00 PM: Fickle Feline Jon goes snowboarding with his "friends"...

  • 9:00 PM: Fickle Feline Can't wait to meet them!

  • 9:01 PM: Fickle Feline Kate: "my kids my kids my kids my kids...my kids my kids..."

  • 9:01 PM: Fickle Feline Look at all the people who want her autograph...I can't imagine wanting her autograph

  • 9:02 PM: Fickle Feline I love that she acts like she cares, but she isn't even looking at her fans...

  • 9:02 PM: Fickle Feline I just figured out why Jon has that funky tan - that's a snowboarding tan from his goggles! Makes so much more sense now!

  • 9:03 PM: Fickle Feline Jon - passive aggressive remark #3a: "We're not moms. Nor do we try to be"

  • 9:04 PM: Fickle Feline Hey - if you're watching, jump in...you KNOW you have something to say about this...

  • 9:05 PM: Fickle Feline I love that Kate's hair is "perfect" when she wakes up in the morning...see, the shelack is working!

  • 9:05 PM: Fickle Feline Do you think she runs lines with them every night before bed??

  • 9:05 PM: Fickle Feline And sponsored by Ragu?? Is Ragu organic??

  • 9:06 PM: Fickle Feline I thought they lived on 100% organic food for $200 a week...

  • 9:07 PM: Fickle Feline I have yet to figure out how the hell they manage that...$200 per week...10 mouths...that's $20 per person...per week. Ummm....I can maybe see $20 per person per day!

  • 9:08 PM: Fickle Feline I gotta scrape the whole bunny down...I seriously have to watch Cake Boss.

  • 9:08 PM: Fickle Feline Awh, now it's Kate's birthday...and Jon was away? What a jerk!!

  • 9:09 PM: Fickle Feline She has to make her own bday cake? How unfair. I am sure some bakery would have given her a cake.

  • 9:09 PM: Fickle Feline "It just happened to fall on Kate's birthday"...right Jon

  • 9:10 PM: Fickle Feline I'm sure that broke his heart...missing her birthday to go snowboarding on his own for 5 days. He looks super interested in this whole disabled athletes bit.

  • 9:10 PM: Fickle Feline He's just happy there is only one kid to work with and not 8.

  • 9:11 PM: Fickle Feline Back to Kate, doing a "whole lot of nothing". Cue music...and the bus! Surprise!

  • 9:11 PM: Fickle Feline "oh my. There IS a bus!"

  • 9:12 PM: Fickle Feline Kate is not a very good actress...

  • 9:12 PM: Fickle Feline As IF she didn't know exactly what was going to happen. Gimme a break.

  • 9:13 PM: Fickle Feline And back to Jon on the mountain with the disabled kids. Is this supposed to make us like him more?

  • 9:15 PM: Fickle Feline I would kill for 5 days by myself...no offense meant to my husband, kids, etc...

  • 9:16 PM: Fickle Feline TLC really likes little people, eh?

  • 9:16 PM: Fickle Feline and we're back...

  • 9:17 PM: Fickle Feline I wonder if Jon and Tracy went for drinks after their day on the slopes?

  • 9:17 PM: Fickle Feline So, Kate obviously got a chance to change her clothes, because she looks pretty glammed up for cake making.

  • 9:18 PM: Fickle Feline More cake!!!

  • 9:18 PM: Fickle Feline This season of J&K+8 is sponsored by CAKE

  • 9:19 PM: Fickle Feline I love how Kate's voice goes all high when she is fake-excited.

  • 9:19 PM: Fickle Feline I wonder if those cakes taste any good?

  • 9:20 PM: Fickle Feline As if Kate cares about what kind of mess her kids make when they aren't at home. What.ever.

  • 9:21 PM: Fickle Feline Duff meet Kate..."reality" tv heaven!!

  • 9:21 PM: Fickle Feline giant blue mountain of goodness

  • 9:22 PM: Fickle Feline is it just me, or is Maddie...really gd annoying?

  • 9:22 PM: Fickle Feline And there's Jon on the black diamonds...

  • 9:22 PM: Fickle Feline I wonder if we'll get one frame of Jon & Kate together on this show...anyone willing to bet on it?

  • 9:23 PM: Fickle Feline Wow...Honda ad overlaid on top of the kids going down a slide.

  • 9:23 PM: Fickle Feline These kids are being used I tell ya!!

  • 9:24 PM: Fickle Feline Though, I'd probably watermark all my kid pics for the next 10 years with a Honda logo for a new CR-V.

  • 9:24 PM: Fickle Feline Heck, I'd probably give my kids a second middle name of Honda

  • 9:24 PM: Kath Can I ask why Kate's face looks so f'd up? Is it just me?

  • 9:24 PM: Fickle Feline She is downright ORANGE!

  • 9:25 PM: Fickle Feline She has more makeup on her mug than those cakes have icing.

  • 9:25 PM: Kath Her hair is driving me insane too. Am I being too brutal?

  • 9:26 PM: Fickle Feline @Kath, it's a friggin' helmet...

  • 9:26 PM: Fickle Feline holy shit - a frame with them together!!

  • 9:26 PM: Kath I can't believe they're cross-promoting TLC shows now. Sad.

  • 9:26 PM: Fickle Feline Well, they gotta pay the bills.... (wink)

  • 9:27 PM: Kath Kat, that's b/c the whole "split up" fiasco happened after these episodes were taped.

  • 9:27 PM: Fickle Feline I think they are officially split up, and so technically whatever Jon did wasn't cheating, but Kate is super pissed that he got caught and ruined the fairytale.

  • 9:27 PM: Kath Publicity stunt galore. It worked - 10M viewers last week! And despite my skepticism, I'm watching too, lol.

  • 9:28 PM: Fickle Feline It's like a trainwreck...I just can't look away.

  • 9:29 PM: Kath I know, me too. I wonder if they'll do the "thing" at the end, with Jon and Kate and their supposed dislike for one another.

  • 9:29 PM: Fickle Feline Gawd I hope so.

  • 9:29 PM: Fickle Feline Cut to screaming kids hopped up on sugar.

  • 9:29 PM: Fickle Feline Do those kids come with a mute button?

  • 9:29 PM: Kath Better be. We just lost an hour of our lives!

  • 9:30 PM: Kath Half an hour?

  • 9:30 PM: Fickle Feline Oh snap...

  • 9:30 PM: Fickle Feline really TLC?

  • 9:30 PM: Fickle Feline What a rip...

  • 9:30 PM: Kath Man, oh man. Oh wait - there's more!

  • 9:30 PM: Fickle Feline Oh man - Maddie is wedged in between them...cannot. touch. Kate....

  • 9:31 PM: Fickle Feline Second Half, let's GOoooooooooooooo!

  • 9:31 PM: Fickle Feline Oh man, Kate took Maddie??

  • 9:31 PM: Kath Not a fan of Maddy, BTW.

  • 9:31 PM: Fickle Feline She is a brat.

  • 9:32 PM: Fickle Feline And not as cute as her twin sister...

  • 9:32 PM: Kath Totally. A mini-version of Kate.

  • 9:32 PM: Fickle Feline Yes! Check out how her arms are always crossed!

  • 9:33 PM: Fickle Feline Jon: "Kate's in California" (what he really means: thank god...I can't stand her)

  • 9:33 PM: Fickle Feline Listen to Jon justify we never see him and Kate together..."we're really busy"...uh yeah

  • 9:33 PM: Kath I love the subtitles, lol!

  • 9:34 PM: Fickle Feline Hah! Do we really need those at this point?

  • 9:34 PM: Fickle Feline Well, maybe for Aaden.

  • 9:34 PM: Fickle Feline Missing one kid is easier...means...not having Maddie around is a JOY

  • 9:35 PM: Kath Is it just me, or are the kids a bit boring this season?

  • 9:35 PM: Fickle Feline They are boring because they have too much space...they aren't on top of eachother anymore driving eachother bonkers

  • 9:35 PM: Fickle Feline Electric cars, jebus...spoiled!!

  • 9:35 PM: Fickle Feline those poor dogs.

  • 9:36 PM: Kath Yes, you're right. The chaos is missing, which was key to the show. Oh god, listen to me.

  • 9:36 PM: Kath I feel so sorry for Cara.

  • 9:37 PM: Fickle Feline Yeah

  • 9:37 PM: Fickle Feline she is kind of stuck with all those monsters...

  • 9:38 PM: Kath Okay,Kat - hubby is changing the channel b/c he can't stand it anymore. I'm outta here. Have fun with the rest of this blog, and letting me bust in!

  • 9:38 PM: Fickle Feline Scott has left the building...

  • 9:38 PM: Fickle Feline He can't handle it...lol.

  • 9:39 PM: Fickle Feline I think Hannah needs to be rescued. She is my favourite. Little mama.

  • 9:39 PM: Fickle Feline "we allowed you guys to film for 1 full day"

  • 9:39 PM: Fickle Feline nice

  • 9:40 PM: Fickle Feline What is with Jon taking the kids on these massive hikes?

  • 9:40 PM: Fickle Feline They are going to traumatize the wildlife.

  • 9:40 PM: Fickle Feline But I do love when they all get sticks and beat eachother...that's the good stuff.

  • 9:41 PM: Fickle Feline Kid #1 screaming...Alexis...shocker.

  • 9:41 PM: Fickle Feline Oh man...bit through her lip...that's no good.

  • 9:42 PM: Fickle Feline She looks okay...

  • 9:42 PM: Fickle Feline She's probably just psyched to get to be alone for once.

  • 9:42 PM: Fickle Feline Can you imagine living with 9 other people?

  • 9:42 PM: Fickle Feline There's Maddie again...damn that kid is annoying. She DOES take after her mom....

  • 9:44 PM: Fickle Feline 17 minutes to go...will Jon & Kate reconcile? Any takers?

  • 9:44 PM: Fickle Feline I'm thinking no....probably not.

  • 9:45 PM: Fickle Feline Will we meet Jon's girlfriend or see his bachelor pad?

  • 9:45 PM: Fickle Feline Or maybe they've renovated the barn for him?

  • 9:45 PM: Fickle Feline Kate seems to be wearing that purple shirt a lot.

  • 9:46 PM: Fickle Feline Also, is she orange on your tv? Is it her or do I need to adjust my colour settings??

  • 9:47 PM: Fickle Feline Jon gives Alexis a coffee in place of a popcicle...

  • 9:47 PM: Fickle Feline typical dad...

  • 9:47 PM: Fickle Feline These subtitles are overkill.

  • 9:48 PM: Fickle Feline Kids are bitching about Alexis's coffee...can't wait to hear what they think about Maddie getting to go away with Kate. But maybe they are just happy to get a break from the tyrants.

  • 9:48 PM: Fickle Feline Kate...bitching about how 8 year olds eat. Gimme a break...she's 8!

  • 9:49 PM: Fickle Feline Looks like Jon has about 20 guys helping him with the swing set. For all the complaining he does about setting it up, it seems a bit ... uh... "fake" ??? lmao.

  • 9:49 PM: Fickle Feline Glad they got some token shots of him with a hammer though.

  • 9:50 PM: Fickle Feline Kate and Maddie go to buy the other kids some plastic crap

  • 9:50 PM: Fickle Feline I bet she is like the president...she doesn't even travel with a wallet or money...no need, everyone just gives her stuff....

  • 9:51 PM: Fickle Feline Maddie really is mini Kate "you didn't tell me this!!" Mini-kate: "me neither!"

  • 9:51 PM: Fickle Feline I want to strangle them both...

  • 9:52 PM: Fickle Feline Hmmm...these wii commercials are making me feel very lazy.

  • 9:52 PM: Fickle Feline Sun Chips - are they organic??

  • 9:52 PM: Fickle Feline Sarah Snow would NOT approve. First Ragu, now Sun Chips. Le sigh. How the mighty have fallen.

  • 9:53 PM: Fickle Feline Graduates crunchy snacks...organic? They look like fake food to me...or cheesies for babies.

  • 9:53 PM: Fickle Feline I mean, not that, uh, I have never given my baby cheesies.

  • 9:54 PM: Fickle Feline 2nd baby gets everything older kid gets, you just cut it up really small. That's what everyone does, right?

  • 9:54 PM: Fickle Feline 6 minutes to go and no sighting of Jon's girlfriend...

  • 9:55 PM: Fickle Feline And where is this body guard we have heard so much about?

  • 9:55 PM: Fickle Feline There is Jon putting up the swing set "alone" again.

  • 9:55 PM: Fickle Feline Love it...Aiden broke the toilet.

  • 9:56 PM: Fickle Feline Boys will be boys...

  • 9:56 PM: Fickle Feline I think Scott broke our toilet lid the same way! Except he isn't 5 years old...

  • 9:56 PM: Fickle Feline so what's his excuse?

  • 9:57 PM: Fickle Feline Kate: "I can't believe she's 8 and a half, almost 9". (She really means "I can't believe I have to live with this kid for another 9 years")

  • 9:58 PM: Fickle Feline Play set is up! Good job Jon (and your crew of 20). Kids are happy.

  • 9:58 PM: Fickle Feline Those poor dogs...sliding on their hyneys...

  • 9:58 PM: Fickle Feline Someone needs to rescue those dogs.

  • 9:59 PM: Fickle Feline Anyone notice that this show is somewhat lacking in content? They have somehow managed to make a show of Kate and Maddie doing sweet-f-a in Cali, and Jon putting up a swing set.

  • 10:00 PM: Fickle Feline Is your love cup filled? That's right up there with your passion bucket is overflowing...
